STIHL FSA 86 Cordless Brushcutter – AP System Review

This review explores the STIHL FSA 86 Cordless Brushcutter – AP System, focusing on who it suits, standout features, battery runtimes, and how it compares within the AP range. You’ll also find practical setup and trimming tips, a full specifications list, and clear answers to popular questions.

Who the STIHL FSA 86 Cordless Brushcutter – AP System is for

The FSA 86 is a confident choice for dedicated home gardeners and semi-professional users who want reliable cutting performance without cords. It thrives on tasks such as lawn edging, overgrown trimming, and tougher mowing duties where extra bite and control make the difference. Its low sound levels make it ideal for work around homes, schools, hospitals, and other noise-sensitive environments. It also suits anyone already invested in the AP battery platform, as well as users who value ergonomic handling, adjustable controls, and the option to tailor the cutting head to the job. Fleet managers and pros will appreciate compatibility with the STIHL connected ecosystem for runtime tracking and maintenance planning.

Key features

AP System flexibility, tool-only value: Sold as a bare tool, the FSA 86 slots straight into the AP battery system, making it easy to share batteries and chargers across other AP tools. This helps streamline kit and provides predictable runtime planning across your setup.

Strong cutting performance with a generous swath: A 36 V platform paired with a 350 mm cutting circle enables fast trimming and confident clearing in grass and light scrub. The brushcutter handles general garden maintenance through to demanding tidy-ups with ease.

Multiple cutting heads for different jobs: Supplied with the AutoCut C 6-2 head (refills are tool-free for quick line changes), it also works with PolyCut 6-2 polymer blades and DuroCut 5-2 for denser vegetation and light scrub. This flexible head compatibility lets you match the cutting setup to grass types and site conditions.

Comfort-forward ergonomics and control: A softgrip handle integrates the main controls with a lock function and helps damp vibration, while the variable speed trigger lets you dial in power for precision around borders or push harder through thicker patches. The sturdy aluminium shaft adds durability, and the adjustable loop handle fine-tunes working height and balance. A spacer guard helps you trim neatly around trees, shrubs, fencing and other obstacles.

Quiet operation for sensitive locations: With low noise emissions, the FSA 86 supports early starts, weekend work, and jobs near neighbors or public spaces while maintaining a composed, professional feel.

Connected-ready with Smart Connector: Compatible with the STIHL Smart Connector, the tool can log operating hours and share data via Bluetooth into the STIHL connected App. This helps you stay ahead of maintenance and ensures the brushcutter is consistently ready for action.

Safety eyewear included: Clear protective glasses are included to get you trimming right away.

STIHL FSA 86 Cordless Brushcutter – AP System vs similar models

Compared with lighter-duty AP System trimmers typically aimed at casual homeowners, the FSA 86 offers a broader cutting circle, more assertive performance for tackling thicker grass, and the versatility of interchangeable heads. It maintains easy handling and low noise, making it a step up in capability while staying friendly to use.

Relative to higher-output professional brushcutters in the AP range, the FSA 86 prioritizes maneuverability and comfort. It delivers strong, precise trimming with a variable-speed trigger and adjustable loop handle, while remaining compatible with the same battery ecosystem and connected features for streamlined fleet management.

Usage tips

Choose the right cutting head for the task: line for everyday edges and lawn care, polymer blades for efficiency in longer grass, and a serrated-line head for denser patches and light scrub.

Preshape and protect your trimming line: soaking trimmer line in water for 12–24 hours before use improves flexibility and helps reduce breakage. Keep extra line on hand and use the tool-free refill to minimize downtime.

Dial in control: use the variable-speed trigger to manage noise, runtime, and cut quality. Lower speeds are excellent for delicate work; higher speeds power through thicker growth.

Set up your ergonomics: adjust the loop handle to match your height and stance, and use the spacer to maintain clean lines around trees, posts, and borders.

Look after wildlife: inspect long grass, hedging, and borders for small animals or nesting birds before you begin.

Optimize battery choice: select AP packs for portability or opt for backpack batteries when you need extended runtime. Track operating hours with the Smart Connector to stay ahead of maintenance.

The loop handle is a great advantage in narrow spaces, such as when clearing between bushes, shrubs or park benches. The practical handle position allows you to move your power tool freely and to guide it easily and precisely, even in confined spaces.

The softgrip handle integrates the control lever for switching on and off as well as a control lever lock, to make it easier to operate your cordless brushcutter. Not only is it easy to grip, but it also absorbs some of the vibrations that arise during operation.

The power tool is compatible with the Smart Connector, meaning it can be integrated into the STIHL connected system. Once you have attached a Smart Connector to the power tool, after one-time commissioning it will record the power tool’s operating hours and transmit them to the STIHL connected App via Bluetooth. In addition to displaying the operational time, the app also provides an overview of all necessary maintenance, ensuring that you do not overlook important upkeep and that your power tool is always in a ready-to-use condition.
