STIHL MS 881 Petrol Chainsaw Review: Ultimate Power for Professional Timber Work

This review covers the STIHL MS 881 Petrol Chainsaw in depth, focusing on who it suits best, its standout features, key specifications, how it compares with similar professional models, practical usage tips, and answers to common search-based questions. Built as the successor to a legendary workhorse, the MS 881 brings market-leading displacement and power together with smart engineering touches that support nonstop productivity in the toughest forestry and harvesting scenarios.

Who the STIHL MS 881 Petrol Chainsaw is for

The MS 881 is tailored for professionals who demand relentless cutting performance on oversized timber. It suits foresters, loggers, and sawmill operators who regularly handle large-diameter felling, bucking and ripping, including work in harsh and remote environments. With bar options up to 41 inches and compatibility with saw frames, it is a natural choice for big-wood harvesting and on-site milling. Operators who value reduced maintenance intervals, extended service life, strong cold-weather reliability and refined ergonomics will find the MS 881 especially compelling.

Key features

Class-leading engine performance
The MS 881 claims the top spot for displacement at 121.
6 cc and delivers a potent 6.
4 kW, giving users commanding torque and cutting speed for the most demanding wood. Its efficient 2-MIX engine meets EU5 emissions requirements while maintaining the powerful character professionals expect.

Optimized for long bars and big timber
Available in 30, 36 and 41-inch bar lengths, the saw is supplied with a .
404 inch Rapid Super chain for aggressive, controlled cutting on large logs. The platform can also be fitted to a saw frame for precision ripping and milling tasks.

Smart oiling with real savings
A controlled-delivery oil pump lets you dial in lubrication to match the job. Select the E setting to trim bar oil usage by up to 50%, then increase flow instantly for very dry wood or extra-long guide bars. Paired with the STIHL Ematic system, oil is directed precisely where it is needed along the bar and chain for consistent protection and reduced consumption.

High-efficiency HD2 filtration
The HD2 air filter uses PET media with ultra-fine pores to capture very fine dust while resisting oil and water. It cleans easily and the cartridge swaps without tools, supporting longer service intervals and dependable engine protection in gritty conditions.

Consistent performance over long shifts
A compensator within the carburettor helps maintain steady power output and fuel mixture characteristics even as the air filter gradually loads up, allowing extended operation with minimal interruption.

Winter-ready operation
Cold-weather performance is reinforced by a simple summer/winter selector that routes pre-warmed intake air around the carburettor in winter mode to keep it free from icing.

Smooth starts and quick servicing
A decompression valve eases pull force on startup, while tool-free caps speed refuelling and chain-oil top-ups. Side-access chain tensioning makes on-the-spot adjustments fast and protected.

Comfort-focused anti-vibration system
Engineered buffers and springs isolate vibration from the handles, delivering a more composed feel at the grips and promoting reduced fatigue over long days.

STIHL MS 881 Petrol Chainsaw vs similar models

As the direct successor to the MS 880, the MS 881 advances the formula with EU5-compliant 2-MIX technology, refined oil management, and enhanced air filtration. Professionals moving from an older platform will appreciate the precise, adjustable lubrication and the HD2 filter’s robust dust handling, which together support long days on oversized timber with less routine attention.

Compared with popular mid-size professional saws, the MS 881 stands out for its extended bar options up to 41 inches, .
404 chain compatibility, and top-tier displacement. While mid-size models emphasize maneuverability for all-round forestry, the MS 881 is purpose-built to dominate the largest diameters and sustained heavy cuts. For teams running multiple saws, pairing an MS 881 for big-wood tasks with a mid-size pro saw for limbing and smaller fells brings a versatile, productivity-first toolkit.

Usage tips

– Choose the bar length that matches your typical timber diameter; reserve the longest bar for the biggest stems and milling on a saw frame.
– Set the oil pump to the E position for everyday cutting to reduce consumption; increase flow when using very long bars or working in dry or dusty environments.
– Keep the chain sharp and correctly tensioned via the side-mounted adjuster; check tension after the first few minutes of cutting as new chains seat.
– Use the decompression valve on every start to reduce pull effort and preserve the starter system.
– Switch to winter mode in cold conditions to route warmed intake air around the carburettor and keep performance consistent.
– Inspect and clean the HD2 filter regularly; replace the cartridge tool-free when needed for peak airflow and power.
– Match replacement chains to the .
404 in pitch and correct guide bar groove width for optimal fit and lubrication.

Side-mounted chain tensioning allows for protected, easy and quick chain tensioning and replacement. The tensioning screw is inserted laterally through the sprocket cover.

The controlled-delivery oil pump reduces your chainsaw’s oil consumption by up to 50%. To use it, simply select the E position. For very long cutting attachments or very dry wood, an additional oil volume can be set by the user.

The HD2 filter protects your power tool’s engine against even the finest dust, ensuring a longer service life and reduced wear. The filter made from PET material has up to 70% finer pores than fleece and polyamide filters, and is also oil- and water-repellent. This also makes it easier to clean the filter. When needed, the filter cartridge can be easily replaced without tools.

The compensator is a control system in the carburettor, which uses pressure compensation to ensure that engine performance, exhaust gas quality and fuel consumption remain virtually constant over a long period of time, despite increasing contamination of the air filter. You do not need to clean the air filter until there is a noticeable drop in performance. This means that you can work for a long time without maintenance.

With tool-free fuel cap, you can open and close oil and fuel tanks in just a few simple steps, thanks to a bayonet closure.

The STIHL Ematic system comprises a STIHL Ematic or Ematic S guide bar, a STIHL Oilomatic saw chain and a controlled-delivery oil pump. It ensures that the chain oil gets to where it is needed for lubrication. This allows you to reduce oil consumption by up to 50%. If you often work in dusty conditions or if you use long guide bars, you can quickly and easily increase the oil quantity at any time with the new oil pump system.

Thanks to carburettor preheating, you can work reliably with your chainsaw even in winter. You can change the operation from summer to winter mode in just one simple step. In the winter setting, pre-heated intake air flows around the carburettor, preventing it from icing up.

The decompression valve makes it easier to start your power tool. When starting, you can allow some of the compressed mixture to escape from the cylinder by opening the valve. This protects the start-up system and reduces the amount of force required on the starter cord.

Vibrations can occur when you put your power tools through their paces, and these are particularly noticeable in the grip area. The buffer and spring elements of the STIHL anti-vibration system reduce the transmission of vibrations to the handle area and therefore to your body. The result is that your power tool is more comfortable to hold and your work is much less tiring.
