STIHL MS 182 Petrol Chainsaw Review

This review of the STIHL MS 182 Petrol Chainsaw covers what makes it a powerful, homeowner-ready tool for cutting firewood and felling small trees. You’ll find a clear look at its stand-out features, essential specifications, how it compares to related models, practical usage tips, and quick answers to popular questions. The goal is to help you choose confidently and get the best results from day one.

Who the STIHL MS 182 Petrol Chainsaw is for

The STIHL MS 182 is ideal for homeowners who want dependable cutting performance with easy operation. It’s well suited to seasonal firewood cutting, property maintenance, trimming storm-damaged limbs, and tackling small-tree felling. If you value quick starts, smooth handling, efficient fuel use, and clear visibility of oil and fuel levels, this model is a great match. With bar options in 14 and 16 inches, it gives confident cutting capacity while remaining manageable for regular yard work.

Key features

High-efficiency 2-MIX engine: The STIHL 2-MIX engine delivers strong cutting power with reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions, meeting the strict EU Stage V standard. It’s designed for reliable performance and efficient operation over extended sessions.

Narrow-kerf 3/8″ P chain: A 3/8″ P saw chain and narrow kerf combine for excellent cutting efficiency. The result is smooth, fast cuts on firewood and small-diameter timber with less effort.

Choice of 14″ or 16″ guide bar: Select the bar length that fits your work. The 14-inch option is compact and agile, while the 16-inch option increases reach and cutting capacity for slightly larger jobs.

Anti-vibration system: Buffer and spring elements reduce the transfer of vibration to your hands and arms. This helps the saw feel more comfortable in use and supports consistent control during longer cutting sessions.

Single-lever operation and stop function: Simple controls streamline operation. With the stop function, the control lever returns to run position after shutdown, so warm restarts are immediate.

Effortless starting aids: STIHL ErgoStart reduces the effort needed on the starter cord. A manual fuel pump further speeds cold starts by priming the system, especially after breaks in use.

Fast chain tensioning: Two convenient options keep the chain at the right tension. STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning enables tool-free adjustments with an easy-to-turn wheel, while side-mounted chain tensioning offers secure, protected adjustments via the sprocket cover.

Transparent tanks and tool-free caps: Clear fuel and oil tanks make level checks instant. Bayonet-style caps mean both tanks open and close quickly without tools.

Compensator for reduced maintenance: A carburettor compensator helps maintain consistent engine performance and fuel efficiency over time, even as the air filter accumulates dust.

Four-channel technology: Optimised mixture flow supports powerful combustion and strong throttle response with impressive fuel economy.

Warranty upgrade opportunity: Extend the domestic warranty from 2 to 3 years when you purchase 5 litres of STIHL MotoMix fuel with the chainsaw. Registration is handled by the approved dealer at the point of purchase.

STIHL MS 182 Petrol Chainsaw vs similar models

Against smaller homeowner saws such as the STIHL MS 172, the MS 182 offers a step up in cutting performance and bar length options, making it an excellent choice when you want faster work rates and a bit more reach for thicker logs.

Compared with models commonly used for more frequent or heavier-duty cutting, such as the STIHL MS 211, the MS 182 focuses on homeowner-friendly simplicity, fuel efficiency, and easy starting. It delivers confident performance for routine property tasks while keeping operation straightforward and comfortable.

For users who prioritise nimble handling with ample capacity, the MS 182 provides a compelling middle ground—pairing its efficient 2-MIX engine and anti-vibration system with either a 14-inch or 16-inch bar to match the job.

Usage tips

Choose the right bar and chain: Use the recommended 14″ or 16″ guide bar with the correct 3/8″ P chain to maintain cutting efficiency and smooth operation.

Set chain tension properly: Use Quick Chain Tensioning for fast, tool-free adjustments, or the side-mounted tensioner for secure, precise tensioning. Re-check after the first few cuts as a new chain beds in.

Start smoothly: Prime the manual fuel pump before cold starts and use ErgoStart for an easy, even pull. With the stop function, warm restarts are immediate.

Monitor levels at a glance: Take advantage of the transparent fuel and oil tanks to top up before long sessions. Maintain adequate chain oil for consistent lubrication.

Keep the air path clean: The compensator maintains strong performance over time, and periodic air filter checks help sustain peak power and efficiency.

Let the saw work: With the narrow-kerf chain and four-channel technology, apply light, steady pressure and allow the chain to cut—this preserves sharpness and control.

Protective gear and stance: Use appropriate PPE and a stable stance. Engage the chain brake when moving between cuts or adjusting the chain.

Thanks to STIHL Quick Chain Tensioning, you can tension your saw chain quickly and without tools, thanks to the adjusting wheel. Turning the adjusting wheel to the left releases tension on the saw chain, and turning the adjustment wheel to the right tensions the saw chain. The guide bar will be automatically secured when you tighten the sprocket cover.

Side-mounted chain tensioning allows for protected, easy and quick chain tensioning and replacement. The tensioning screw is inserted laterally through the sprocket cover.

STIHL ErgoStart saves you energy when starting your power tools. A smooth and even pull on the starter cord is all that’s needed. The required speed on the starter cord is significantly reduced, and the engine starts quickly and reliably even with a slow pull. An additional spring between the crankshaft and the starter cord roll makes this easier.

The manual fuel pump reduces the number of strokes required to start the power tool, making the start-up process quicker and easier This is particularly helpful after longer breaks in operation. To use it, actuate the pump several times before starting. This will ensure that there is enough petrol in the system when starting.

The compensator is a control system in the carburettor, which uses pressure compensation to ensure that engine performance, exhaust gas quality and fuel consumption remain virtually constant over a long period of time, despite increasing contamination of the air filter. You do not need to clean the air filter until there is a noticeable drop in performance. This means that you can work for a long time without maintenance.

With tool-free fuel cap, you can open and close oil and fuel tanks in just a few simple steps, thanks to a bayonet closure.

With the transparent oil tank, you can easily and quickly check the fill level of the chain oil. This means that you always know when you need to add chain oil for efficient work over long periods.

Thanks to STIHL four-channel technology, you can work with your power tool with very low fuel consumption and high performance. The four overflow channels guide the fuel-and-air mixture into the cylinder in a targeted and more compressed manner, which optimally burns the fuel and significantly increases the performance of the engine.

Only one start position is required on the combi lever. Thanks to the stop function, once the machine is turned off the control lever immediately moves back into the operating position. This allows a warm machine to be restarted immediately.

With the STIHL 2-MIX engine, you can reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, and therefore operating costs. This 2-stroke engine is low-maintenance and uses fuel efficiently even at high power levels. Use a mixture of petrol and engine oil as fuel. The STIHL 2-MIX engine complies with the strict EU Stage V emissions directive.

Vibrations can occur when you put your power tools through their paces, and these are particularly noticeable in the grip area. The buffer and spring elements of the STIHL anti-vibration system reduce the transmission of vibrations to the handle area and therefore to your body. The result is that your power tool is more comfortable to hold and your work is much less tiring.
