STIHL MS 151 T Petrol Chainsaw Review

This review explores the STIHL MS 151 T Petrol Chainsaw, focusing on performance, features, specifications, and real-world use. You’ll learn who it suits best, what sets its upgraded 2-MIX engine apart, how it compares with similar chainsaws, and the best ways to get the most from its compact, high-precision design. A helpful FAQ at the end answers popular search queries about the model.

Who the STIHL MS 151 T Petrol Chainsaw is for

The STIHL MS 151 T is ideal for professionals and dedicated users who value low weight, agile handling, and clean, accurate cutting. Arborists, tree-care specialists, and landscapers will appreciate its compact balance for crown work, reductions, and fine pruning. Grounds teams and estate managers gain fast starts and reliable day‑to‑day operation, while skilled homeowners and orchard keepers benefit from refined control for shaping, limbing, and maintenance cuts. Its smart start-up, efficient fuel use, and vibration-damping design make it a confidence-inspiring choice for high-precision tasks.

Key features

Upgraded 2-MIX engine for efficient power
The latest 2-MIX engine integrates a new cylinder, piston, and exhaust, unlocking up to 1.
10 kW of power and a 15% torque boost to 1.
1 Nm. This means quick, decisive cuts while retaining a remarkably lightweight build. The engine meets EU Stage V emissions requirements, delivering strong performance alongside reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Four-channel technology
Optimised scavenging with four-channel technology guides the fuel–air mix precisely into the cylinder for efficient combustion. The result is crisp throttle response and energy-smart operation across the rev range.

Effortless starting system
STIHL ErgoStart reduces the effort required to pull-start the engine. A smooth, even pull brings the saw to life quickly, and an additional spring mechanism helps the starter engage reliably. A manual fuel pump further shortens the starting sequence, particularly after longer pauses, by priming the fuel system in a few presses.

Side-mounted chain tensioning
Chain tension can be adjusted securely from the side through the sprocket cover. This placement keeps your hands protected and makes re-tensioning or chain swaps quick and simple.

Quick-access shroud and reduced-maintenance design
A one-movement, tool-free shroud makes it easy to access and clean the air filter. The carburettor’s compensator maintains a consistent fuel–air ratio even as the filter accumulates dust, helping preserve engine performance and extend maintenance intervals.

Comfort in the canopy
The anti-vibration system uses buffer and spring elements to minimise felt vibration at the handles, supporting comfortable control during longer sessions. A fold-out hook allows safe attachment to a rope for lifting, lowering, or securing the tool when working aloft.

Fast refuelling with tool-free caps
Bayonet-style fuel and oil caps open and close without tools, making pit stops swift and tidy.

Easy bar and chain selection
When it’s time for replacements, use the brand’s bar and chain advisor to match the correct guide bar and chain to your saw and cutting tasks.

STIHL MS 151 T Petrol Chainsaw vs similar models

Versus the previous MS 151
This upgraded version advances engine architecture with a new cylinder, piston, and exhaust, elevating output to 1.
10 kW and increasing torque by 15% to 1.
1 Nm. Users gain stronger drive in the cut while preserving the hallmark lightness and agility that make precise work effortless.

Versus a larger top-handle model
Compared with a bigger-displacement top-handle saw in the range, the MS 151 T prioritises minimal weight and finesse. The compact format enhances reach and accuracy for selective pruning, while larger models typically emphasise maximum cutting capacity and longer bar options. Both approaches are advantageous: choose the MS 151 T for nimble control and delicacy, or a larger sibling when you want more headroom for broader cuts.

Usage tips

Start-up made simple
Before a cold start, press the manual fuel pump a few times to prime the system. With ErgoStart, use a smooth, steady pull on the cord—the engine is designed to fire with minimal effort.

Dial in chain tension
Use the side-mounted adjuster to set correct chain tension: the chain should sit snug on the bar yet move freely by hand with the brake off. Re-check tension after the first few cuts.

Keep airflow clean
Open the shroud in one motion to inspect and clean the air filter. The compensator helps sustain performance over time, but an occasional clean keeps response sharp.

Refuel fast, cut clean
Use the tool-free caps for quick oil and fuel top-ups. Always run the correct petrol–two‑stroke oil mix recommended for 2-MIX engines to support longevity and peak performance.

Match bar and chain to the job
Choose 25 cm or 30 cm guide bars and the specified 1/4"P chain for precise cuts. An official bar and chain advisor tool can help confirm compatibility.

Work comfortably at height
Use the fold-out hook to attach the saw to a climbing line for controlled lifting or lowering, and enjoy reduced fatigue thanks to the anti-vibration system.

Side-mounted chain tensioning allows for protected, easy and quick chain tensioning and replacement. The tensioning screw is inserted laterally through the sprocket cover.

STIHL ErgoStart saves you energy when starting your power tools. A smooth and even pull on the starter cord is all that’s needed. The required speed on the starter cord is significantly reduced, and the engine starts quickly and reliably even with a slow pull. An additional spring between the crankshaft and the starter cord roll makes this easier.

The manual fuel pump reduces the number of strokes required to start the power tool, making the start-up process quicker and easier This is particularly helpful after longer breaks in operation. To use it, actuate the pump several times before starting. This will ensure that there is enough petrol in the system when starting.

The shroud has been practically designed to be opened with just one movement and without tools. This makes it easier to clean your chainsaw’s air filter.

The compensator is a control system in the carburettor, which uses pressure compensation to ensure that engine performance, exhaust gas quality and fuel consumption remain virtually constant over a long period of time, despite increasing contamination of the air filter. You do not need to clean the air filter until there is a noticeable drop in performance. This means that you can work for a long time without maintenance.

With tool-free fuel cap, you can open and close oil and fuel tanks in just a few simple steps, thanks to a bayonet closure.

Thanks to STIHL four-channel technology, you can work with your power tool with very low fuel consumption and high performance. The four overflow channels guide the fuel-and-air mixture into the cylinder in a targeted and more compressed manner, which optimally burns the fuel and significantly increases the performance of the engine.

Thanks to the fold-out hook, you can attach the tool to a suspension rope, then pull it up into the treetop or lower it down from there. You can also use it to secure the power tool. When folded away, the hook does not interfere with work or storage.

With the STIHL 2-MIX engine, you can reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, and therefore operating costs. This 2-stroke engine is low-maintenance and uses fuel efficiently even at high power levels. Use a mixture of petrol and engine oil as fuel. The STIHL 2-MIX engine complies with the strict EU Stage V emissions directive.

Vibrations can occur when you put your power tools through their paces, and these are particularly noticeable in the grip area. The buffer and spring elements of the STIHL anti-vibration system reduce the transmission of vibrations to the handle area and therefore to your body. The result is that your power tool is more comfortable to hold and your work is much less tiring.
